Title: Signal Propagations in Dense Granular Materials

Abstract:

We discuss signal propagations in dense granular materials. The basic study consists of carrying out two dimensional simulations of soft frictional disks exposed to perturbations varying both in space and time. For spatially independent simulations, we illustrate the properties of propagating waves and compare the results to the ones found in literature. For spatially dependent perturbations, we discuss how this additional dependence influences the properties of propagating waves. We also consider the effects of volume fraction, polydispersity, elasticity and friction. Then, we discuss whether the propagation can be described by a simple linear wave equation with damping. Finally we point to the results suggesting that more complex, nonlinear model may be required to describe fully this problem.
