Title: A pattern switch in a granular crystal.

Author (Talk): katia bertoldi, SEAS - Harvard university

Abstract:

Quasi-martensitic pattern switches within a 2D granular crystal possessing particles of different radii and contrasting elastic properties are triggered by uniaxial loading. The transformation of the crystal structure from one ordered periodic state to another of lower symmetry is facilitated by an intermediate shear band regime. Switches in the crystalline geometry manifest themselves as energetic events, some of which can be identified upon analysis of the macroscopic stress-strain behaviour of the crystal. The switching mechanism identified here is of considerable potential in the design of tunable metamaterials.
