We study granular packings obtained by depositing spheres on a face – centered cubic substrate under the influence of gravity. We use X-ray computed tomography to visualize the three dimensional packings and extract the particle centers. By varying the total energy of the depositing particles a wide range of volume fractions was obtained. We investigate the structure of the packing as a function of volume fraction by calculating the radial distribution function and the angular correlation of the particles as measured by the bond order metric. Computing the same parameters as a function of the system’s height allows us to study the transition from order to disorder and the growth of the disordered phase within the packing.
