Title: Granular flow about intruders

Author (Talk): Stephan Koehler, WPI, Physics

Abstract:

We measure the forces acting on intruders moving in different directions in a granular medium consisting monodisperse glass beads. For simple intruder shapes, such as posts and square parallelepipeds, we observe simple relationships for the drag and lift force which involve the intruder's dimensions and the particle size. These forces are a combination of surface stresses as well as edge stresses ( i.e. line forces). We also perform a study of moving walls and extend the classic passive failure earth pressure model for incipient yield to the case of continuous motion. We conclude by comparing our results with recent continuum theories for granular flow.
