Abstract:

Geometry of constituent particle and deposition protocol have a tremendous effect on packing of granular particles. We investigate assemblies of rod like particles in 3d using micro-focus X-ray computed tomography. The particles were deposited using 2 different protocols, slow random deposition and deposition on a vibrated substrate. We compare emergence and evolution of local and global structures in these packing as we vary the volume fraction. We also investigated the effect of aspect ratio on packing.
