Title: Normal mode contributions to the effective mass of granular media

Abstract:

We demonstrate that the complex valued frequency dependent effective mass is closely approximated by a finite sum of normal modes. Moreover, we show that this sum is over modes located in the lower half of the complex plane, and the associated frequencies are bounded by the range of our experiments. Finally, we investigate the effect of wetting films on the frequency dependent response of a granular system.
